Consuelo Gotay (Bayamón, Puerto Rico, 1949–)
Printmaker, typographer, and designer. Her limited-edition artist books enrich the literary expression of the Caribbean poets on whom she bases her work. Consuelo Gotay's artistic production demonstrates her mastery of graphic arts, such as silkscreen printing, linocut, and woodcut. Her interpretations of the Caribbean landscape represent native vegetation with sinuous and elegant lines.
She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and a master's degree from Columbia University in New York. She has taught printmaking courses at the School of Plastic Arts of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, and at the Universidad Acción Pro Educación y Cultura (UNAPEC) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Upon her return to Puerto Rico, she studied with Lorenzo Homar at the Bernardino Cordero Bernard Vocational School in Ponce. Subsequently, she studied at the Center for Book Arts in New York and the Canadian School for Non-Toxic Printmaking. From 1995 to 2002, she was a professor and directed the Department of Graphic Arts at the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico (EAP), where she developed the El Polvorín de las Artes del Libro Workshop and taught courses in printmaking, design, letterpress printing, and bookbinding. In 2011, she retired from the EAP. She has received distinctions such as an honorable mention at the 13th San Juan Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Printmaking, and a Bronze Medal at the Barranquilla Printmaking Biennial, Colombia, 1998.
